Long Needed Update

July 27, 2004

Well, folks. It's been awhile.

What have I been up to since June 30? Here are some thoughts and musings.

  • A buddy visited with us over the July long weekend. Much drinking and hilarity ensued. Ever drank a $4 pitcher? Ever spent $7 on one beer? You can guess the types of establishments we visited by those two questions.
  • The Incubus concert in Auburn Hills was swell. Well worth the $35 USD ticket plus incidentals. I didn't spend another $35 USD on a t-shirt or $7.50 USD on a large, plastic bottle of beer, though. (Eh, Jab?)
  • I'm registered to compete in a triathlon in mid-August, so I've officially entered training mode. Semi-kidding, obviously...
  • Spent a weekend back home for a friend's birthday and a night out. Already looking forward to moving back home.
  • Work has been going well. Much progress is being made.
  • Great Lakes Crossing Mall in Auburn Hills is worth the 30 minute drive from Windsor if you're so inclined.
  • Michigan girls are attractive.
  • Customs officials like to pull silly tactics to attempt to catch you in a lie when crossing into the US. Observe: Official - "Where you headed." Me - "Great Lakes Crossing Mall." Official - *disbelieving look* "Sure you are." Asshat...
  • The Great McEwan 2004 Marshmallow Roast™. This past Sunday, July 25, my friend and I went out on a rollerblade at 6:30 pm. While blading along the river, we heard sirens and saw firetrucks pass by 3 times. I wondered aloud where the fire was. Turns out it was at the house across the street from us. Nine people live in that house, most of them drunks. (They've been out on their porch a few times at 6:30 am when I leave for work.) The cops have been there four times since the beginning of the summer and four cars were there Sunday around 1:00 pm. The drunks had been making crude comments to a girl who lives two houses down from them. Needless to say we were shocked by what we saw when we came back: the front of the house was gutted. Our neighbor said the house went up literally five minutes after we left. The cause of the fire was some sort of argument, which I happened to hear as I was tying up my blades on our front steps. Four firetrucks were there at one point and two stayed well into the night. Other highlights of the night included drinking a beer on the porch of the house right next to the burnt one as we tantalized the firefighters with our brews. Four of the inhabitants were injured but none were killed.
  • We've taken a few trips to the beach, although it's nothing compared to Grand Bend/Sauble/Wasaga, and those are nothing compared to Bermuda.
  • We currently have a buddy staying with us again so a trip out last night was obligatory. I paid for it this morning, though.
  • Bourne Supremacy tonight.
  • Final long weekend of the summer upcoming. Will take a trip to Pelee and the beach, weather permitting.
  • Time to start thinking about the work report. Then comes the starting of the work report...
  • Trying to follow the US political landscape as best I can sans cable TV. Never wished I had cable more than after the two Yankee-BoSox classics I've missed this summer.
  • One more Tigers game may be on the horizon, but it has to be before August 10. Hard to believe it's been 5 years since I was last in Bermuda. I miss it.

That concludes the much needed update. Posting should resume more regularly. Continue visiting.
